Unlike boring black-and-white tech books and shell manual entries, Hackett and Bankwell teaches readers the things they need to know and explains them in a format that is easily understood by the average newcomer to free and open source software. Starting with a history of UNIX and The GNU Project, Hackett and Bankwell hits all the high points of Linux desktop installation and basic operation.
Woody Hackett, one of the principals of Hackett and Bankwell Worldwide, needs to teach the new staff members, Kaori Soto and Calvin Green, all about how to get started with Ubuntu Linux. When he arrives at their offices at Interplanetary Pictures, the staff doesn’t even know what Linux is. Kaori foolishly thinks it’s an operating system designed by and for hooligan hackers! Woody sets her straight and teaches her the truth about Linux-based operating systems–that they’re good alternatives to commercial operating systems that can be used in a wide variety of circumstances.
From embedded devices running embedded Linux distros to mainframe systems and Linux clusters, Linux-based operating systems are flourishing in the marketplace, and Hackett and Bankwell use it to build up their business while reducing their operating costs by eliminating license fees. Woody loves teaching Linux to the people involved in his company all about GNU Linux because he disrespects corporate operating system producers and their corrupt business practices. Woody believes that Linux isn’t just for government organizations and cash-strapped non-profits; he and Jerome are on a mission to relieve the nefarious proprietary operating system producers of their customers and strangleholds by telling the world about Linux-based operating system distributions (distros) like Ubuntu.

Nobody wants to spin his or her wheels reading through verbose technical documentation that only makes sense once you understand the underlying concepts. For this reason, Intarcorp Ltd has produced the original Linux comic book called “Hackett and Bankwell.” Throughout the series, readers will be introduced to various GUI and shell concepts that will help familiarize them with Linux-based operating systems and get them to a level wherein they can be professionally certified Linux users and administrators. If you are a Windows power user and want to get a job in Linux, you should read Hackett and Bankwell so you can hack and bank.

Did you know that Linux-based servers running the Apache web server program power half of all websites on the internet? To get started using the Apache server, it is helpful to know some thing about the system on which it runs. Both RedHat- and Debian-based Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, will run Apache very well. But before you learn too much about servers, you should learn about getting set up using Linux as an operating system.
With Linux-based platforms, meaning platforms built on and around the Linux kernel, you can use your computer as a desktop workstation with a graphical user interface (GUI), and you can also use it as a server. Usually, servers are configured to operate solely from the command line interface (CLI), but this is obviously not a practical way to edit photos with GIMP. As such, Linux developers have been creating graphical tools wherein users can use a mouse and other non-keyboard input devices to interact with their systems.
As more software and hardware tools have become available for Linux-based systems, these software and hardware resources have become more sophisticated. GIMP is an optimal inexpensive substitute for expensive commercial photo editing software. You can use it to do just about anything that you can do with the proprietary commercial image manipulation programs available in the marketplace. GIMP even has its own plugins, and if you learn how to write software for Linux, you can write your own GIMP plugins to do special effects.
Hackett and Bankwell is a great starting point for learning Linux. Unlike other training programs and technical resources, it’s clear and exciting. Black text on white pages with really complex explanations of confusing technical terms can get really boring and impede learning. Hackett and Bankwell helps users learn more quickly and retain concepts more easily because of its hands-on, example-oriented style. Moreover, as Woody Hackett helps Interplanetary Pictures get starting with Ubuntu Linux, he explains to them what the various terms they need to know mean in the context of what they’re doing with their systems and in context of the other terms they’ve already learned. Instead of dumping a truckload of new lingo on them, he walks them through the jargon that will help them learn more instead of confusing them with unrelated terminology and lessons.
